What this route is designed to do

A private route with a clear purpose

First-time East China visitors who want the classic Jiangnan sequence in a compact week

  • Start and finish in Shanghai for straightforward international transport planning.
  • Use a water town as a route connection rather than another out-and-back excursion.
  • Give Suzhou one garden focus and Hangzhou one West Lake focus.
  • Choose this version only when the group accepts several active moving days.

Six days is possible because every place has a defined role

Shanghai introduces the region through the Huangpu riverfront, historic neighborhoods and the modern skyline. A water town provides the pedestrian canal setting. Suzhou is centered on designed garden space, while Hangzhou is anchored by the broader West Lake cultural landscape. Keeping those roles distinct prevents the itinerary from becoming a sequence of similar photo stops.

The compact version includes several hotel or city transitions. It works best for travelers who pack lightly, accept moderate walking and do not need slow mornings every day. Families with young children, senior travelers or guests arriving exhausted from a long-haul flight should compare the seven-day option.

Transport decisions must cover the complete route

Private road travel simplifies luggage and hotel-to-hotel movement, while selected high-speed rail legs may reduce highway time. The decision depends on hotel locations, station access, group size, mobility and the vehicle needed for regional sightseeing. A train timetable alone does not describe the full transfer day.

The route should identify where luggage is stored during Zhouzhuang or another water-town stop, which hotel handles the regional overnight and how the final Hangzhou-to-Shanghai movement protects the next day's departure. Vehicle overtime and holiday traffic rules belong in the quote, not in assumptions.

Keep Suzhou and Hangzhou focused

In Suzhou, one classical garden plus Pan Gate, Tiger Hill or a canal district is usually enough before moving onward. In Hangzhou, West Lake remains the anchor and either Lingyin Temple or tea-country time becomes the supporting theme. Trying to include every possible stop makes the six-day route feel shorter, not richer.

Before booking, we confirm hotels, room types, guide coverage, vehicle, tickets, meals, passport-dependent reservations and the exact start and finish. Each item can be adjusted, and no unpublished internal rate is presented as a customer price.

A possible sequence

The order remains flexible around traffic, entries, weather and your confirmed pickup.

  1. Day 1: Shanghai arrival

Transfer to the hotel and protect recovery time.

  2. Day 2: Shanghai city

Connect a historic district, the Bund and one modern-city viewpoint.

  3. Day 3: Water town and Suzhou

Use Zhouzhuang or the confirmed town on the way to the Suzhou overnight.

  4. Day 4: Suzhou to Hangzhou

Visit one garden and one supporting Suzhou layer before continuing.

  5. Day 5: Hangzhou to Shanghai

Anchor the day at West Lake and choose temple or tea time before returning.

  6. Day 6: Departure

Use the correct airport, station or cruise-terminal transfer buffer.

Questions before booking

Practical questions

Is six days rushed?

It is active but workable for travelers comfortable with several moving days; the seven-day version is calmer.

Is rail or private car better?

We compare hotel-to-hotel time, luggage and local sightseeing needs before choosing each leg.

Can Wuzhen replace Zhouzhuang?

Potentially, but it changes the route, walking and timing and must be quoted as a revised plan.
